Tennessee came from behind to beat Arkansas 24-17 on Saturday in Fayetteville, setting up the Third Saturday in October.

How it unfolded

The Vols’ defense was dominant in the first half, allowing just 99 total yards and shutting out the Razorbacks, but Tennessee’s offense struggled. Arkansas scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 14-7 lead. Tennessee cut the gap to 14-10 with a field goal before the third quarter ended. In the fourth, a 68-yard catch-and-run by Brame set up his own 1-yard touchdown run to put the Vols back in front, 17-14, and Arkansas answered with a field goal to tie it at 17. With 4:07 left, Tennessee started inside its own 10, and DeSean Bishop ran for 59 yards. A few plays later he scored from 8 yards out. The defense then forced a three-and-out to seal it.

The numbers

George MacIntyre threw for 247 yards and a touchdown in his first career start, and Bishop finished with 138 yards. Tennessee outscored Arkansas 17-3 in the final 17 minutes. It was the Vols’ first win in Fayetteville since 2001, and they improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the SEC.

What’s next

The Third Saturday in October game against No. 6 Alabama is Saturday, October 17. ESPN’s recap lists the Vols as the road team, while Tennessee’s schedule listings show the game at Neyland Stadium, so confirm the site before you plan travel.

What to watch

  • Whether Tennessee’s offense, which ESPN said never looked especially sharp, can find a rhythm.
  • Whether Bishop can keep running well against a tougher defense.
  • How MacIntyre handles a bigger stage in his second start.

Why it matters

The rivalry dates back to 1901 and Alabama leads the all-time series, so a win would be a big boost for Tennessee’s season.
