University of Tennessee System Mobilizes Statewide Experts for Grand Challenges Summit

NASHVILLE — Grassroots leaders, voting rights advocates, university students, and community organizers will assemble at the Avon Williams Campus of Tennessee State University for the annual Democracy Summit organized by Organize Tennessee. The daylong conference offers tactical training, legal analysis, and strategy sessions focused on strengthening year-round civic infrastructure throughout urban, suburban, and rural communities.

Year-Round Community Power and Leadership Development

Unlike seasonal campaign mobilizations, the summit emphasizes continuous, issue-based civic education. Organizers assert that sustainable civic health depends on long-term investment in neighborhood leadership.

Sessions throughout the summit focus on building grassroots coalitions that bridge geographic and economic divides. Workshop facilitators will guide attendees through legal frameworks governing nonpartisan community organizing, public records requests, and municipal budget tracking. By training residents to participate effectively in city council and county commission meetings, the initiative seeks to elevate local voices in decision-making processes.

Practical Workshops on Local Governance and Administration

A central feature of the summit is the “Behind the Ballot” educational track, designed to demystify county-level election administration and election integrity measures. Participants will examine election software auditing, poll worker recruitment, and ballot chain-of-custody protocols managed by county election commissions.

Additional breakout tracks focus on:

  • Faith and Community Alignment: How faith institutions can serve as nonpartisan polling hubs and community resource nodes.
  • Youth Civic Leadership: Training high school and university leaders to manage nonpartisan voter education drives across college campuses.
  • Policy Research Literacy: Teaching grassroots advocates how to analyze state legislative filings and evaluate policy impacts on local public services.
